Savannah State quarterback D’Vonn Gibbons was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Offensive Player Of The Week and kicker Kenneth Lockhart was named the SIAC Special Teams Player of The Week in a press release from the conference office today.
Both Gibbons and Lockhart were instrumental in Savannah State’s 41-34 SIAC victory over Benedict this past week in Theodore A. Wright Stadium.
With 1:24 to play, Gibbons ran in a 31-yard go-ahead touchdown for the Tigers, capping an extraordinary day for the senior quarterback. He led the entire field with 138 rushing yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. Gibbons connected on two catches for 45 yards of air offense as well.
Bouncing back from a rough game against Livingstone, Lockhart brought the boot against Benedict. He nailed two field goals—the first a 44- yard career-high kick— punted four times for 194 yards and put up 399 yards on 7 kickoffs for the Tigers. He also added four extra points, contributing 10 total points to the scoring effort.
Savannah State football enters week three of the 2021 season 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC. They host Morehouse College in Theodore A. Wright Stadium on Sept. 25. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Tickets can be found at ssuathletics.com/ tickets.
