Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Savannah Alumnae Chapter proudly announces it 2012 scholarships recipients. Each year, Savannah Alumnae Chapter awards more than $6,000.00 in scholarships to deserving students: three Academic Scholarships in the amount of $1,600 each; one Community Service Scholarship in the amount of $800.00; and one Academic Scholarship to a non-traditional student, in the amount of $800.00.
Recipients of the 2012 Academic Scholarships are Terayia Farley, Diamond Rashad, and Destiny Reed. Terayia Farley is a graduate of Groves High School. She has a 94 GPA ranked 4th in her graduating class of 282 students, and will attend Georgia Southern University. Her career goal is to become a corporate attorney. Terayia received the honor roll award, the 2011 Georgia Certificate of Merit, and was a member of the National Honor Society, GEAR UP, and the school’s basketball team.
Diamond Rashad is a graduate of Savannah Arts Academy. She has a 95 GPA and plans to attend Columbus State University, where she will major in Exercise Science. Her career goal is to become a pediatric occupational therapist. Diamond was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and National Society of High School Scholars.
Destiny Reed was a graduate of Savannah Arts Academy and an accomplished musician. She has a 92 GPA and plans to attend Berry College. Her career plans are to become a pharmacist. Destiny has received honors in English, social studies, and National Piano Guild. She was also a member of the Skylite Jazz Band, Thespian Society, the school’s track team, Chess Club, and Christian Fellowship Club. Destiny is the daughter of Genevie Frazier and Mark Reed.
Criteria for the Community Service Scholarship include: 80 on a 100 Point Scale or 3.0 on a 4.00 Scale GPA or higher; proof of college/university acceptance; documented community service of 100 or more hours; single with no dependents; demonstrated leadership ability; submission of a current resume. Recipient of the 2012 Community Service Scholarship is Melinda Greene.
Melinda Greene is a graduate of Islands High School. She plans to attend Savannah State University, where she will major in International Business with a minor in Arabic Languages. At Islands High School she was active with Future Business Leaders of America, the Student Leadership Program, varsity volleyball, basketball, and tennis. Melinda is the daughter of Patrina Lingard.
The Non-Traditional Scholarship criteria include: 2.5 or higher GPA; sophomore or junior in college; demonstrated financial need; submission of a current resumé, MarieBelle Rodriguez is the recipient of the 2012 Non-Traditional Scholarship. MarieBelle is a rising senior at Armstrong Atlantic State University. She is majoring in Middle Grades Education. She has appeared on the Dean’s List and is a HOPE Scholar. MarieBelle is the mother of one son.
