Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship and CNN’s Roland S. Martin… A Perfect Match!

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s strong beliefs in education and support of scholarships for our youth have brought Savannah Alumnae Chapter to a great challenge of raising funds for the more than $9,000.00 it awards in scholarships every year.

This year, in addition to its usual fundraising activities, the chapter has taken a giant step in bringing the nationally-known, awardwinning, multifaceted journalist and CNN Political Analyst Roland S. Martin to Savannah for a scholarship luncheon at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront.

The event, “Political Minds in Action,” which will feature Martin as the keynote speaker, will be held at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront Ballroom Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 12 Noon.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University.

Roland Martin has won more than 20 professional awards for journalistic excellence, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television News Directors; several First Place awards from the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators; two citations from the National Associated Press-Managing Editors Conference; the top sports reporting award in 1997 from the National Association of Black Journalists; and honors from the Houston Press Club.

He is a 1987 graduate of Jack Yates High School- Magnet School of Communications, and a 1991 graduate of Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in journalism.

In May 2008, Martin received a Master’s Degree in Christian Communications from Louisiana Baptist University. Roland Martin is a commentator for TV One Cable Network. He is also a CNN Analyst, appearing on a variety of shows.

Martin is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Beta Phi Lambda Chapter – Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will join the Deltas in this venture by sponsoring a VIP Reception for the press and sponsors who have donated at least $1000.00 toward this event.
