Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.- Savannah Alumnae Chapter celebrated its Founders Day Friday, March 27, at Connor’s Temple Baptist Church.

The speaker for the occasion was Geraldine W. Hudley, the South Georgia State Coordinator.

The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Torch Bearer Awards and the contributions to selected community organizations.

The Torch Bearer Awards were designed to recognize outstanding members of the Savannah/Chatham County Community. The awards are intended to honor everyday men and women who have committed their time, intellect and talents to making our community and the world a better place.

This year, the award categories were in the areas of Education, Health Services and Political Action.

In the Education category the sorority honored Lawrence Hutchins, Jr. a long-time Savannah/Chatham County educator, who has dedicated much of his life to his Alma Mater-Alfred E. Beach High School.

Mr. Hutchins spent some forty-two years molding young minds and sharing the artistry of music.

For his commitment, dedication, and passion for excellence in education, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Savannah Alumnae Chapter saluted Lawrence Hutchins, Jr. with the 2009 Torch Bearer Award for Excellence in Education.

In the area of Health Services, Eugene Nwosu, M.D., a local cardiologist was honored.

Dr. Nwosu was born in Nigeria. After many trips to his homeland over the years, Dr. Nwosu became acutely aware of the devastation that the country’s economic downturn had on his people.

As a result, on each of his visits home, he held free medical clinics to service those who otherwise would receive no medical care.

After more than ten years of providing free medical services he shared his experience with a colleague and friend, and in July 2001, an expanded medical mission team from Savannah and Detroit, MI traveled to Nigeria.

More than 2,500 people were seen during this five day period with more people trying to make their way to the temporary medical site.

In October 2001, Dr. Eugene Nwosu and his wife Mary Nwosu, together with Dr. Mark Manocha, Dr. Cliphane McLeod, and Mrs. Joan McLeod established Goodness & Mercy Foundation, Inc. to offer humanitarian medical services and health/nutrition education to the needy of Africa who otherwise could not afford medical care.

For his giving and humanitarian spirit, the Deltas honored Dr. Eugene Nwosu as the 2009 Torch Bearer for Excellence in Health Services.

When it comes to politics and political action, everyone has an opinion about who is good or bad.

However, in the midst of this seemingly unending chaos is a gentleman who is a true servant of the people, Representative Bob Bryant.

Representative Bryant serves in House District 160, representing Garden City and Chatham County. He was honored for his willingness to work for and with the people.

His numerous legislative duties include: membership on the Defense and Veterans Affairs, Economic Development and Tourism and Ways and Means Committees, Yet, he still serves his community by chairing the Crime Prevention Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Advisory Committee of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Chatham County, and the Savannah Domestic Violence Task.

Even in the midst of all this high profile activities, he finds time for the little moments, like taking time to address some very eager young ladies known as the Delta GEMS (teen young ladies who are mentored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.- Savannah Alumnae Chapter) who had the occasion to visit the Georgia Legislature.

For his political fortitude and servant’s countenance, Delta Sigma Theta honored Representative Bob Bryant as the 2009 Torch Bearer for Excellence in Political Action.

In addition to the Torch Bearer Awards, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority-Savannah Alumnae Chapter made its annual contributions to selected local community organizations.

This year, $400.00 donations were presented to the Beach Institute, the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club, and Carnegie Library.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been in existence for ninety-six years.
