Coastal Heritage Society Launches Support To Preserve Rare War Of 1812 Cannons

On June 9, 2014, Coastal Heritage Society will officially launch the Support the Fort campaign to preserve and restore two 19th century artillery pieces. The cannons were originally mounted at Fort Wayne, overlooking the Savannah River, during the War of 1812. Georgians were wary of an attack when British naval ships were spotted off the coast in 1814. Memories of the English occupation of Southern Georgia during the American Revolution were still fresh. Should Savannah fall Georgia would have been vulnerable to English rule once again.

The first phase of Coastal Heritage Society’s Support the Fort campaign will be the restoration of these unique artifacts from Georgia’s early history. Donations will be used to research their history, and to restore and prepare them for exhibit on Old Fort Jackson’s parapet. The cannons are currently on display on the grounds of the Fort.

Donations can be made by visiting Old Fort Jackson, calling 912.232.3945 or sending a check payable to Coastal Heritage Society to 1 Fort Jackson Road, Savannah, GA 31404.
