Mayor Otis Johnson and state Sen. Eric Johnson honored Savannah resident David Puckett on Nov. 18 in anticipation of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute,” launched last year to spotlight ordinary citizens accomplishing extraordinary deeds, and airing on Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). Puckett was named a CNN HEROES honoree last month for his work to provide free artificial limbs, braces and care to people in rural southeastern Mexico. He was awarded $25,000. Hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CNN HEROES: AN ALL-STAR TRIBUTE will air globally on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Español.

This year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes, as selected by the Blue Ribbon Panel, were unveiled by Cooper on CNN’s American Morning last month. The public selected the “CNN Hero of the Year” Liz McCartney, via voting at the CNN Heroes site.

David Puckett first connected with the Yucatan people of southeastern Mexico while volunteering on a mission there as a teenager. Struck by the overwhelming poverty and the physical challenges he saw people facing in the rural communities, he vowed to return and make a difference there. After entering the field of orthotics and prosthetics, Puckett saw his opportunity to help improve the lives of people in the Yucatan. His nonprofit, PIPO Missions: Limbs and Braces to Mexico, collects donated, used orthopedic braces and artificial limbs in the United States and crafts new ones from their recycled components. On average, Puckett makes a six-day trip every two months to distribute the custom prosthetics and braces, while also providing ongoing care. Over the course of his 41 trips to the region, Puckett has helped more than 420 individuals – and that number continues to grow. He’s found that word of his work spreads fast through the villages and people will drive hours to attend his clinics.
