Celebrating 155th Anniversary of “40 Acres and a Mule” Meeting in Savannah

“For the first time in all of American history, blacks were meeting with white Americans to discuss their own welfare. No one had ever asked them their opinion before.” W. W. Law, Savannah Civil Rights Leader, 2001

The African American Health Information & Resource Center, 1910 Abercorn St., will be hosting a screening on Sunday, January 12 at 3:00 PM of “40 Acres and a Mule,” a docudrama about the meeting of U.S. government officials with 20 African-American church leaders on January 12, 1865 in Savannah, Georgia. It was this meeting that produced the U.S. land redistribution policy known as “40 Acres and a Mule.” An audience discussion follows the screening. The event is free and open to the public. The purpose of the showing of the film and discussion with the audience is threefold: To address the crucial relationship between the black church and the success of the meeting; to explore the event’s historical significance; and to examine issues raised by the meeting that continue to impact us today.

You should attend if you are a person who wants to learn more about this significant event in the country’s history and who wish to promote racial reconciliation.
