Black Girls Still Rock: Michelle Obama Launces New Education Initiative

At the International Day of Girl that took place on October 11th, former first lady Michelle Obama revealed that The Obama Foundation is starting a new initiative called Global Girl Alliance. The Obama Foundation was founded in 2014 under the vision of continuing the unfinished renewal and global progress. The Global Girl Alliance aims to empower girls by increasing educational opportunities around the world. Obama was recently a guest of the “Today” show and she stated, “The stats show that when you educate a girl, you educate a family, a community, and a country.” This newfound alliance will work with over 1500 starter organizations to create a network for them to work together and provide young girls all over the world an opportunity to be educated. The Obama organization will provide training, technical support, and network opportunities for these organizations as well. There are over 98 million adolescent girls that are not in school. The Global Girls Alliance aims to eliminate the hurdles that many girls face when trying to gain an education. “I made a commitment to girls around the world when I was in the White House that I would not walk away from these issues and this is my fulfillment of that promise through the Obama Foundation.” Michelle Obama tell the “Today” show. This is the second initiative the Obama Foundation has launched this year. In July, the foundation released a non-partisan voting initiative called “When we all Vote.” This initiative creates a conversation around the importance of exercising the right to vote. These initiatives are just the tip of the ice-berg for the former first lady Michelle Obama. Her memoir, “Becoming” is set to be released November 13th, following a multi-city book tour.
