Members of the 2011-12 Savannah State men’s basketball team will be honored at halftime of the SSU women’s basketball contest against Florida A&M on January 19.
During halftime, players and coaches from last season will receive their championship rings for winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title.
Last season, the Tigers won 13 consecutive regular season games and finished the season with a 21-11 overall record.
SSU also received an invitation to play in the National Invitation Tournament. The title was the first regular season championship by a SSU men’s basketball team since the 1980-81 squad.
The Tigers (8-9, 2-1) are coming off a 78-70 double overtime win over Morgan State. In that game, Preston Blackman scored a careerhigh 41 points and made eight 3-pointers.
Blackman is the first Tiger player to score at least 40 points in a game since Levi Williams scored 45 points against Paine on December 12 during the 1978-79 season. Blackman’s eight 3-pointers tied Steve Kelly who made eight 3-pointers against Albany State during the 1987- 88 season. Deric Rudolph tied Kelly’s mark last season against South Carolina State.
The Savannah State women’s basketball game against FAMU will start at 4 p.m. and the men will follow at 6 p.m.
