AWOL Presents Situations: The Trials and Tribulations of Youth Shakespeare’s Sonnets

This year, the AWOL kids will be wowing Savannah theater goers with another installment inspired by the work of William Shakespeare entitled, Situations, a story about the trials and tribulations of Savannah youth on February 11-12th at 7pm at the Trustees Theater located at 216 East Broughton, St.

Lakesha Green, AWOL’s theater arts director, has had an opportunity to work with dozens of youth from all over the Greater Savannah area since joining the organization in 2008. Inspired by the resilience of AWOL youth, this year’s play will give youth involved an opportunity to tell their story in their own words and through Shakespeare’s sonnets.

“I am constantly impressed with the ability of my students to rise to the expectation and then take things a step further, and exceed expectations. This years group of nearly 50 youth have truly been the wind beneath my wings, and I am so proud of their show and can’t wait for the rest of the Savannah community to see them shine”, Lakesha Green, AWOL theater arts director.

AWOL’s theater arts programs is one of the most unique arts based youth development programs in the city. Using art as a way to engage youth, AWOL’s program not only provides youth with high quality arts education, youth also gain valuable life skills while developing positive relationships with adult and peer role models. For the past six years the program has grown and recently was selected as a finalist for the prestigious 2010 National Arts and Humanities award, which deems the program as one of the top youth arts and humanities program in the country.
