Join Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), where the popular God on Broadway series will continue every Sunday this October. The special worship services will combine sermons with Broadway musical themes featuring songs from the musicals in celebration of God’s Word. Sunday worship services begin at 11:15 a.m. at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1008 Henry St.
God on Broadway will kick-off Sunday, Oct. 1 with Pippin, the story of a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in his life, followed by the tale of a charming, carnival barker and mill worker who fall in love with Carousel on Oct. 8. The series will continue with the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and Broadway sensation, Wicked on Oct. 15, followed by the story of a lovable genie in Aladdin on Oct. 22. The 2017 series will wrap-up with the account of young dreamer, Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Oct. 29.
The vibrant Asbury Memorial choir will perform selections from these Broadway musicals under the direction of Minister of Music, Ray Ellis. Rev. Reverend Billy Hester offers stimulating, and sometimes amusing, sermons that blend themes from the musicals and biblical texts. “Each year the church looks forward to the month of October for this special approach to worshipping and celebrating God’s Word and Love,” says Minister of Music Ray Ellis. “This year will be one of the best yet and we hope the community will join us to experience these wonderful worship services.”
As a special treat during the final worship service on Oct. 29, Rev. Hester will make an appearance as one of the twentieth century’s most beloved, rock n’ roll cultural icons. This will be a worship service for the books that you do not want to miss!
Hester and his wife, Cheri, have acting experience from both on and off Broadway, and they love using their talents and their former careers to enhance the worship experience. God on Broadway has been a mainstay at the church since 2005 and, each year, it draws sizable attendance of individuals who appreciate the innovative approach to sharing the Gospel and Christ’s love. This series is free and open to the public. For more information or to view segments from past God on Broadway worship services, please visit the God on Broadway page at www.asburymemorial.org.
