The Precious Gems of Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. have had some very exciting and educational activities. On Saturday, March 12, 2011 Registered Dietician Sharon Weeks conducted an engaging one-hour session on Good Nutrition.
The Precious Gems were encouraged to focus on healthy nutrition.
Ms. Weeks addressed parental concerns such as: Should I put my child on a diet? How do I know if my child is at a healthy weight? What if my child is being teased or bullied because of his or her size? and, What if the doctor says my child is overweight or underweight? Physical activity was discussed with examples of moderate physical activities and vigorous physical activities given. The Precious Gems shared with the group physical activities they engage in on a regular basis.
Ms. Weeks also shared with the Precious Gems the education and certification requirements to become a registered licensed dietician. She is licensed in the State of Georgia and is employed by Memorial Medical Health University.
In observance of African American History Month, on February 26, 2011, the Precious Gems took a Black Heritage Tour of Laurel Grove Cemetery, the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, and the Historic First African Baptist Church (downtown). After the tour, they enjoyed a pizza lunch together at the West Broad Street YMCA.
On February 12, 2011, the Precious Gems practiced their public speaking and leadership skills. Valencia Barnwell and Ashley Smith, members of Gamma Upsilon Chapter– Savannah State University, presented the leadership Word of the Month Perseverance.
