The Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted their annual Precious Gems Junior Debutante Cotillion and presented some of the area’s finest young ladies to society on June6th. The Cotillion, held in the Savannah Ballroom at Savannah State University, was the culmination of months of hard work and a host of other activities. The young junior debutantes hosted fundraisers, participated in charm school, a career fair, and other stimulating events helping to cultivate them into womanhood and promote a positive selfimage.
WTOC’s Karla Redditte, a fellow member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, served as the gracious mistress of ceremonies. Highlighting the Cotillion was the crowning of Miss Junior Debutante 2009, Miss Jana N. Carpenter. Jana is the daughter of Nikita and Florence Carpenter. She was the premiere fundraiser among the other young ladies and will represent Gamma Sigma Omega in the Savannah area for one year. Jana was crowned by Miss Gabrielle Gardner, Miss Junior Debutante 2008.
Each year, members of Gamma Sigma Omega work with a group of prospective junior debutantes promoting education and encouraging them to appreciate themselves, their voices, and their places in the community.
This year, the junior debutantes committee was chaired by Ms. Gwen H. Johnson who allowed her enthusiasm and passion for scholarship and service to shine without ceasing. Applications are currently being accepted by Gamma Sigma Omega for the 2010 Precious Gems Junior Debutante Cotillion.
