The eighth annual 3 Days for Armstrong campaign celebrated success Thursday evening as campaign co-chairs Ray Gaster and Danny Pinyan presented a check for $728,044 to Armstrong Atlantic State University President Linda M. Bleicken.
Gaster, an Armstrong alumnus and owner of Gaster Lumber & Hardware and Pinyan, president of the Pinyan Company and trustee of the Armstrong Foundation Board, led a group of volunteers during this year’s campaign, which seeks an annual gift from businesses throughout the region, alumni, and individuals in support of academic scholarships and critical university programs.
“On behalf of all Armstrong students and faculty, I extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to all our partners and friends in the Savannah community for their continued support of this university,” said Bleicken. “I believe that we all realize that a gift to Armstrong represents an investment in our community and provides valuable opportunities for students, who may one day hold positions of leadership right here in Savannah. The private dollars that we receive from our supporters, now more than ever, are vital as we continue to support student scholarships and academic programs.”
Gaster and Pinyan thanked other supporters of 3 Days for Armstrong, including John C. Helmken II, CEO of Savannah Bancorp and chairman of the Armstrong Foundation Board; Jerry Barton, president of Sea Island Bank; Cliff McCurry, Armstrong alumnus and vice chairman of Seacrest Partners; and Cathy Hill, vice-president coastal region of Georgia Power Company. Additional leaders and supporters throughout the community also helped to make this year’s campaign a success.
“With the strong support of our business and community partners, Armstrong will continue to provide excellent educational opportunities to students in our region,” said Scott Joyner, vice president for advancement. “You can’t walk into a hospital, school or many other businesses in the area and not realize that the professional in front of you is an Armstrong graduate,” he said.
Last year, the 3 Days for Armstrong campaign raised $700,000.
