The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan are a year away. In this upcoming Olympics there will be new sports, new tech and some of the familiar faces from previous Olympic Games.
The Tokyo Olympics is rolling out a series of new tech to improve the games as well as to appeal to the younger crowd that will be attending.
Two robot designs are based on Tokyo’s official Olympic mascots, Miraitowa and Someity. These blue and pink bigeyed bots will be on-site at official venues acting as greeters and for photo-ops, but they’re equipped with cameras and digital eyes that can offer expressions in response to human interaction. These robots will be not only be at the site of the games but in other parts of Japan for those who cannot attend.
Sports such as baseball and softball are returning to the Olympics after being away for 12 years. Pitchers Monica Abbott and Cat Osterman are vying for spots on the US team. A softball game will be the first event of the 2020 Olympics.
Brand new to the Tokyo Olympic stage are karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.
There will also be a return of some familiar faces such as Simone Biles in gymnastics, Katie Ledecky in swimming and the US Women’s World Cup team is set to play in soccer.
