Free CPR Sessions Offered at Civic Center April 4 & 6

Sessions are filling up fast for the free CPR training being offered by the City of Savannah. As of this week, more than two-thirds of the 1,000 training slots had been reserved at dozens of locations across Savannah.

A great opportunity for the public to take advantage of this limited offer is on April 4 and 6 at the Savannah Civic Center, 301 Oglethorpe Ave. Over the course of that Thursday and Saturday, the City will offer 16 separate CPR training sessions. Each session lasts roughly an hour. Registration is required. Sign up at www.slicc.org/SavannahCPR

The training is for the simple Hands-Only CPR technique, which involves chest compressions to the beat of the Bee-Gees song, “Stayin’ Alive.” Studies have shown that those who suffer sudden cardiac arrest are 2-4 times more likely to survive if a bystander immediately performs this technique on them.

The classes are “train-the-trainer” format. Each participant will be given a Hands-Only CPR kit, which includes a CPR dummy torso to practice on, a DVD, and other materials. The CPR classes are FREE, but each participant must pledge to train five other people of their choosing in this technique. At the end of 2013, the City’s goal is to have 6,000 Savannahians trained in Hands- Only CPR.
