The Earl T. Shinhoster Youth Leadership Institute to be Held
The Earl T. Shinhoster Youth Leadership Institute will be held July 23 -27, 2012, 9a.m. to 5p.m. at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. Civic engagement is the focus of the week. Youth ages 12 to 17 will participate in activities and workshops that will help them identify ways they may become leaders in their schools, communities and religious institutions.
Presenters will include citizens who are making significant contributions in their communities, many of whom began their journey as youth.
They include State Sen. Lester Jackson, Savannah; State Rep. Roberta Abdul- Salaam, Clayton County; John Taylor, motivational speaker, Atlanta; Braylin Hyde, former debate team captain Bradwell Institute, Hinesville; Ulysses Bryant, chief of security Savannah- Chatham County Public School System; Helen Butler, executive director of the Coalition for the Peoples Agenda, Atlanta; and Stephanie Johnson, vice president of Sun Trust Bank, Savannah; Anelria McGhee, Rebecca Padgett School of Arts, Savannah; and Stephanie. Reaves, Remember.com, New York. During the week, the youth will participate in a history walking tour with Vaughnette Goode-Walker of Footprints of Savannah and an oral history project documenting civil rights history m Savannah as told by local residents.
The project, coordinated by Remember.Com, will spotlight the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.
