We Support Edna Jackson for Mayor of Savannah
Mayor Pro Tem Edna Jackson I t has been almost seven months since Edna Jackson and five other candidates began their campaigns for Mayor of Savannah. Since that time, there have been numerous public discussions of the issues, various advertisements, and of course, a campaign sign has been placed on almost every available lot.
Now, with less than one week before Election Day, we can clearly see that Edna Jackson is the best candidate for Mayor of Savannah, and with your support, she will be a great Mayor. She has the intelligence and leadership ability that we need to bring us together and keep Savannah moving forward. Edna is friendly, compassionate, charming, articulate and efficient. People enjoy being in her presence and working with her.
There are six names on the ballot for Mayor and Edna Jackson has the best combination of education, experience and history of community involvement.
Edna Branch Jackson is a native Savannahian who graduated from Alfred Ely Beach Senior High School. She earned her bachelors degree at Savannah State University and the masters degree from a joint program at Savannah State and Armstrong Atlantic State Universities. She has done additional studies at Georgia Southern University, Harvard University, and Southern University.
Edna Jackson is a proven leader. Her bid to be elected Mayor of Savannah is being supported by many of Savannah’s business, labor and religious leaders.
She has served the people of City, County, State and Nation for many years and in numerous capacities. She has a list of leadership accomplishments that includes being the first female to be elected an Alderman-At-Large in Savannah; the first woman selected to the position of Mayor Pro-Tem of Savannah; Chairman of the Chatham County Municipal Association; President of the National League of Cities Women in Municipal Government; Member of the National League of Cities Leadership Council; Director of the Georgia Municipal Association; and President of the Twelfth District of the Georgia Municipal Association; Chair of the Chatham County Hospital Authority; Vice Chair of the Chatham County Democratic Executive Committee; Member of the boards of the Economic Opportunity Authority and American Second Harvest; and many others.
Mayor Pro Tem Jackson has received numerous awards and citations for her years of community service, including the Savannah Civil Right’s Museum Unsung Hero Award; International Longshoremen 1414 Humanitarian Award, NAACP Freedom Award, Chatham County Democratic Party’s Toby Buttimer Award, Savannah State University Alumnus of the Year, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Alfreta Adams Political Service Award, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Mozella Collier Community Service Award and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Citizen of the Year Award.
During 2007, Mayor Pro Tem Jackson was listed among Georgia’s 50 Most Influential Women. Mayor Pro Tem Jackson has served all of the citizens of Savannah for the past twelve years as Alderman-At-Large Post 1. She has worked well with the Mayor and all members of City Council to decrease crime, develop more affordable housing, and bring more jobs to Savannah.
She is totally committed to keeping local government accessible to all of the citizens of Savannah. The leaders of our neighborhood associations and community organizations will tell you that she did not just start attending their meeting while campaigning for Mayor. She has always been accessible.
Edna has represented us well and we wholeheartedly support her bid to be elected Mayor of Savannah. During the campaign, she has laid out a vision for Savannah that includes job creation and labor force development, crime prevention and public safety, fiscal accountability, environmental protection, as well as infrastructure and drainage improvements.
She promises to maintain open lines of communications with the citizens of Savannah and the leaders of other governmental bodies such as the Chatham County Commission, the Board of Education and surrounding municipalities. She will be a great ambassador for Savannah and enhance our our prestige and reputation throughout the nation and world.
These are trying times that cry out for visionary leadership. Edna Jackson in the woman to lead Savannah during these times. Throughout the tough campaign, she has been charismatic and unshakable. She has been positive in promoting her qualifications and vision for Savannah. She avoided negative campaigning or personal attacks. She has promoted inclusiveness and encouraged us to come together to keep Savannah moving forward.
