Annual Juneteeth Celebration: A Cultural Success

Saturday, June 18, 2011 in Wells Park (38th Street Park), the annual Juneteenth Celebration was a cultural and community success.

Juneteenth commemorates when those enslaved men, women, and children, in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free on June 19, 1865.

This day in Savannah was a day of celebration, family, reflection, unity, and prayer. There was free food, live music, guest speakers, and other activities that help to build a strong family atmosphere for both young and old.

Speakers at the event included State Senator Lester Jackson, who presented a proclamation declaring Juneteenth Day.

City Officials Edna Jackson, Van Johnson, Rudy Jones. Ga State Rep. Bob Bryant were also on hand.

Interim Savannah State University President Dr. Cheryl L. Davenport Dozier along with Dr. Debora Founteneau gave the history of Juneteenth. Speakers also included Servant Emannu’el Branch of Yahshua University.com, and Chester Dunham of WSOK’s The Dunham Report.

Sensational live performances by Domino’s Theory, Atlanta Rap Artist RaSearch, Savannah Rap Artists 57 Kevin, Family Affair; powerful Gospel rappers Chosen, and Rico; performances by The Savannah State Jazz Band, along with local music icons Lafayette Chester and Lil’ Willie Johnson.

Honored at the event were music icons Lafayette Chester and Lil’ Willie Johnson. A surprise award was also given to Sister Solana Plaines for her more than 50 years of community service and advocacy.
