Bass Honored By Alpha Lambda Boule


Archon Otis Johnson and Archon James F. Bass, Jr. Archon Otis Johnson and Archon James F. Bass, Jr. The Archons of Alpha Lambda Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. saluted fellow Archon James F. Bass, Jr. for becoming a Menton Fellow of the Boule Foundation. Bass received the recognition for his support of the national social action work of the Foundation and the Grand Boule. The Boule Foundation was established by Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity more than 30 years ago, and serves as a funding vehicle for the social action programs recommended by the Social Action Committee of the Fraternity.

One of the primary methods used by the Foundation to generate income is through the cumulative giving of Archons and Archousai. The cumulative giving of Archons and Archousai (wives of members of the Fraternity) is encouraged through the Boule Foundation’s Legacy Awards Program, which begins with a $1,000 contribution in honor of Sigma Pi Phi Founder Henry M. Minton. Bass has joined the ranks of several Alpha Lambda Archons who are Menton Fellows. The Fraternity’s highest Legacy Award level that requires cumulative giving of $100,000 is named in honor of Alpha Lambda Archon John B. Clemmons, Sr.

Bass was appointed to the Chatham County Superior Court on May 18, 1995. Prior to his judicial appointment, Bass was the Supervising Attorney for the Savannah Regional Office of the Georgia Legal Services Program.

He currently serves as Chairman of the Access to Justice and Fairness in the Courts Committee of the Council of Superior Court Judges and the Georgia State Commission on Family Violence. He also serves on the Mandatory Continuing Judicial Education Committee and the Special Committee on Drug Courts and is on the Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Equality and Georgia Supreme Court Commission on Drug Courts. Bass began the first Drug Court in Chatham County on October 2, 2001.

After earning a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in history from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Bass earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Bass received the Reginald Huber Smith Fellowship in Community Service Law Award. He was named Man of the Year by the Beta Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was also the recipient of the Robbie E. Robinson Award by the Savannah Bar Association and the Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service.

Currently, Bass serves on the Advisory Board of Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum and is a member of 100 Black Men of Savannah. He serves on the Board of Trustees for St. Joseph’s/Candler Health Systems since 1994. He is Sire Archon Elect of Alpha Lambda Boule and Chairman of the Social Action Committee. His is also a member of The Frogs Club, Inc. of Savannah.

Bass is married to Janice Bass, who is a media specialist for the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education.
