Robert Brown rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown while Jaybo Shaw passed for 109 yards to lead Georgia Southern to a season-opening win over Savannah State at Paulson Stadium before a crowd of 20,430 on September 4. The Eagles (1-0) rolled up 540 yards of offense while their defense held SSU to just 172 yards and had four quarterback sacks. GSU scored 10 points in the first quarter and led 27-0 at the half. SSU (0-1) got on board with 12:25 left in the third quarter when Derek Williams booted a 31 yard field goal. The Eagles answered with a touchdown and added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 45-point victory. Juston Babb rushed for 70 yards for the Tigers while AJ DeFilippis passed for 71 yards. Brian Lackey caught three balls for 37 yards. J. Vince Cochran led the SSU defense with 13 tackles while Darren Hunter had 12 tackles.

Morehouse 47 Fort Valley State 34

Morehouse jumped out to a 20- 7 lead and went on to improve to 2-0 with a win over Fort Valley State at Wildcat Stadium before a crowd of 8,534 on September 4. The Wildcats would close their deficit to 20- 17 late in the first half but Morehouse returned a interception 60 yards for a touchdown and a 26-17 halftime advantage. Morehouse increased their lead to 40-17 but FVSU (1-1) rallied with 14 straight points to pull within 40-34 in the third period. The Maroon Tigers scored the game's final points in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Bethune-Cookman 70 Edward Waters 10

Bethune-Cookman rolled up 635 yards of offense as they cruised to a easy win over Edward Waters at Municipal Stadium on September 4 before a crowd of 5,664. Matt Johnson passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Wildcats (1-0). Johnson finished the afternoon with 122 rushing yards and 159 passing yards. B-CU led 21-0 at the first quarter and 35-7 at the half. With just under 10 minutes left in the third, EWC (0-2) got as close as 42-10 before the Wildcats finished the game with 28 unanswered points.

SSU Opens Cross-Country Season

Savannah State opened their cross-country season by participating in the JU Short Course Duals hosted by Jacksonville on September 3. The SSU women defeated Bethune- Cookman (21-37) but lost to Jacksonville, Stetson and North Florida. The SSU men defeated Bethune-Cookman (20-42), Jacksonville (18-45) and Stetson (18-43) but lost to North Florida. Dominique Givance (18th overall) led the SSU women with a time of 14:44.50 while Reuben Isreal- McBee (9th overall) led the men with a time of 17:11.04
