Step Afrika! To Perform at Armstrong
Step Afrika!
Step Afrika!, a Washington, D.C.-based dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping will perform at 7 p.m., Thursday, September 23 in the Armstrong Fine Arts Auditorium, 11935 Abercorn Street. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The presentation, “Looking Back and Stepping Forward: The Evolution of an African-American Dance Tradition,” includes a screening of “Many Steps” prior to the performance.
The film explores the history of stepping, a dance tradition that developed as part of the African-American collegiate experience.
The dance uses the body as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word.
Step Afrika! was founded in 1994 and has received critical acclaim for its efforts to promote an understanding of stepping. The dance company has been featured on CNN, BET and NPR.
Armstrong Atlantic State University, the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs’ Weave-ADream and the Georgia Council for the Arts, through appropriations from the National Endowment for the Arts, sponsor the program.
