Walter Moore Tigers Hold First Scrimmage
The Savannah State football team held their first scrimmage of the preseason on August 21 at the Tigers practice field as the offense posted a 34-0 win over the defense. Quarterback A.J. DeFilippis passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. DeFilippis ended the day with 140 passing yards. Freshman running back Sheldon Barnes led all runners with 78 yards and a touchdown while Justin Babb added 62 yards on the ground. Babb caught five passes for 40 yards and a touchdown while Brian Lackey added three receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown. Derek Williams kicked two field goals and four extra points. Michael Kuku and Broderic Sellers had four tackles apiece for the defense while Richie Rucker had a interception.
SSU Volleyball To Open Season
The Savannah State volleyball team will open their season on August 27 with a double-header. SSU will host Talledega at 2pm on the SSU campus and will play Brewton-Parker at 4pm. Jennifer Lowe and Whitney Bullock return to SSU for their junior season and newcomers Bryana Gadis, Asiha Williams and Kaniesha Hamilton have shown promise during the preseason. SSU posted a 11-19 record in 2009.
FAMU Hires Athletic Director
Derek Horne has been hired as the new Director of Athletics at Florida A&M. Horne joins the Rattler staff after spending 15 years in athletic administration at the University of Mississippi. He joined the Ole Miss staff in 1995 as assistant athletic director and was promoted to senior associate athletic director during that tenure. Horne is a 1987 graduate of the University of Mississippi. He was a four-year letterman on the Ole Miss basketball team from 1983-1986. As an Ole Miss Rebel, he earned Academic All-Southeastern Conference accolades as a senior and was the team captain his junior and senior seasons. He is a native of Quitman, Ga. He will report to work on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at a salary of $200,000.
