You will see supplements DHA and EPA which are the long-chain components of omega-3 fatty acids. They are called essential fatty acids, because the body cannot make them and best utilizes it from the foods we eat. Research proves that adequate Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet, consistently, can prevent chronic inflammation, which is a leading cause of most chronic diseases to include heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. And can prevent heart attacks, and high blood pressure.

But also reduces the risk of all cancers, including breast, colon and prostate cancer. Prevents autoimmune disorders such as lupus, nephropathy, and fibromylagia. How can you get it? Best to eat the fish. Eating a serving of wild caught, small fish everyday, is the best way to go: salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, lake trout and sardines. Small fish have not accumulated a lot of contaminates, yet.

Low mercury fish includes: Anchovies Flounder Haddock Herring Mackerel Mullet Perch Pollock Salmon Sardine Sole Tilapia Trout Whitefish If you cannot eat fish daily, or, are concerned about mercury or other contaminates, then a supplement of Cod Liver Oil daily is a good substitute.

When buying fish oil supplements, always buy from a good source, and purchase a good brand. Look for it in a refrigerator, in a dark glass bottle. Take it home and refrigerate it. Take cod liver oil with food, either morning or afternoon.

If taken at bedtime it may energize you to the point of not sleeping. Sleep is important. Remember, Health is a Choice. If you have any comments or questions about health issues covered in this column, or an issue you’d like addressed, please call or write to:
