The Educational Technology Center (ETC) at Armstrong Atlantic State University, in partnership with Bartlett Middle School, was recently awarded $93,538 in federal grant funding as part of the fiscal year 2010 Title II, Part D Increasing Student Literacy Competitive Grants.

These statewide grants are designed to improve student literacy through the use of technology. Through this grant, five classrooms at Bartlett will be equipped with the software and technology equipment necessary to support efforts to improve student literacy.

Participating students will use software to improve both reading and writing skills.

They will work collaboratively to research and use the writing process to create multimedia reports and presentations. Students will learn to synthesize interdisciplinary information and apply it using digital media.

“We are excited about working with the new principal, James Heater, and the five grant teachers at Bartlett over the next two years,” said Wendy Marshall, director of the AASU Educational Technology Center. “Through this collaborative partnership, the Armstrong ETC will provide all their sustained and intensive professional learning and support. We will work directly with the teachers to help them discover the best ways to harness the power of these engaging new classroom technology tools to improve both the teaching and learning processes.”

The Armstrong ETC staff will provide the professional learning sequence at Bartlett, as well as offer inclassroom technical and instructional support for the two-year period of the grant.
