People the world over have sought to answer the anti-aging question. While the magic fount of limitless health, energy and vitality has proved elusive to some, modern research is closing in on unmasking the secrets of exactly how to fight aging and keep the body’s systems functioning effectively for many years.
The one thing we do know is that longevity seems to run in families. In one study, children of centenarians have been found to suffer less heart disease than children of shorter lived folk.
From Oakland to Okinawa scientists are intensely studying 100 year-olds to learn their antiaging secrets. A sure route to an age defying body runs along the jogging trail. Regular exercise of all types and intensities including indoor types like mall walking as well as outdoor mountain biking helps maintain healthy weight, reduces disease risks such as diabetes, heart problems and many types of cancer.
But, more than that, physical activity promotes high energy levels, better sounder sleep and a happier mood, all important components of an anti-aging lifestyle. Another approach that seems to slow the aging process is calorie restriction, which apparently works by decreasing harmful free radicals, which is enormously associated with the aging process.
Limiting calories has led to dramatic increases in lifespan. By increasing ones intake of whole foods, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables, water, seeds and nuts, we will naturally eat fewer of the high carbohydrate and high protein foods, and thus fewer calories.
Scientists have found one chemical, resveratrol, believed to imitate the effects of a calorie restricted diet. And most researchers agree that adequate intake of a plant chemical called flavonoids play an important role in maintaining peak health.
Scientific investigation into the aging process shows a link between chronic, low level inflammation, and tissue damage and disease development.
A number of nutrients, including the omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B6, have been found to help lessen inflammation’s harmful effects. Other nutrients, such as vitamins C and natural E, help clear out free radicals, those renegade molecules that harm cells.
Still other nutrients, such as lutein and glucosamine, help specific parts of the body continue to function well over time. So, without a doubt, we are seeing that eating a plant-based diet is what prevents cancer and enhances health on every level, including slowing and even reversing premature aging.
The gift of long life is often an accident for some. But living the kind of life that promotes health and wellness into old age is within the reach of everyone. Nutrition Consulting Saves Lives!
