West Broad Street YMCA Re-Opens Pool to the Community

Children enjoy a fun time at the pool Children enjoy a fun time at the pool On Monday, June 21, the pool at the West Broad Street YMCA opened to members and the public.

“This is a great day for the community,” says Peter Doliber Executive Director. “It’s more than just about having fun this summer. This is about teaching kids to swim.”

The pool had been closed since a vandal attack several years ago. The Y was unable to repair the damage and the pool sat stagnant for years. But many in the community realized the need and importance of having the pool open.

“The majority of accidental drowning in public pools and water parks is minority kids,” offers Tony Welch, Athletic Director at the Y. “We will help change that by teaching kids how to swim and be safe.”

After having received estimates that the repairs would be approximately $100,000 the Y set a modest goal of $35,000 to repair and open the pool. The lower amount was possible in a large part to the donated services of Mr. Walter Weed. Weed is known for his years of work with GCAT and having coached local swimmers to national standings.

With help from the City of Savannah, The 100 Black Men of Savannah, Sunrise Rotary, Top Ladies of Distinction, and numerous donations, the Y was able to raise enough money to start the repairs.

The West Broad Street YMCA will officially open the pool on Monday, June 21, 2010. Pool hours are: Monday-Friday 9:00a.m.- 12:00noon for Day Camp Swim, 1:00p.m.-3:00p.m. Open Swim for the public and members, and 4:00p.m.- 7:00p.m. Swim Lessons. The pool will also be open on Saturdays.

The fee for non members to swim is $.50 for ages 4-17 years old and $2.00 for adults. Members swim free during Open Swim Hours. All individuals will be assessed by qualified life guards to determine how well they swim. “Safety is our number one priority” says Welch.

Swim lessons are available for those who want to learn. The cost for swim lessons is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Lessons are 6- 30 minute sessions. Baby & Me swim lessons will be offered for infants with mothers as well. All lessons will be conducted by certified lifeguards with water safety instructor endorsement.

The pool will also be available to rentals for parties, family reunions, camps and social events.

The West Broad Street YMCA is Savannah’s only downtown Y. It is located at 1110 May Street and is one of 7 Heritage Y’s remaining in the country. Contact Tony Welch at 233-1951 for more information.
