Jones Competes In
Track Nationals
Savannah State sophomore Amara Jones recently competed in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Jones ran in the 400m race and finished 22nd overall with a time of 54.89. Although she failed to advance to the finals, her coach was proud of her. "She has set a new standard for our women’s program," said SSU track coach Ted Whitaker.
Cooper To Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Former Savannah State assistant track coach Donald Cooper will be one of 10 new inductees into the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place September 10, 2010. Cooper ran track and played football for the Bulldogs from 1992- 97. Cooper is currently the interim cross country/track coach at Bethune-Cookman. Besides coaching at SSU and Cookman, Cooper has also worked at South Carolina State, Fort Valley State and Morris Brown.Wells To Sue SSU
Former Savannah State football coach Robert Wells has filed a lawsuit against Savannah State, the Georgia Board of Regents as well as individuals Dr. Claud Flythe, Marilynn Suggs and Shed Dawson. In a recent telephone interview, one of Wells' attorneys said the former coach is seeking his job back as well as lost wages and benefits among other items. James Rollins said his client has suffered stress since losing his job. When asked if they felt they have a good case, Rollins responded "absolutely." He added that Wells is exploring coaching possibilities in the arena league.
Williams Named Interim AD At Albany State
Dr. Richard H. Williams has been named interim director of athletics at Albany State.Williams, who currently serves as ASU’s Faculty Athletics Representative and chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), will replace Dr. Joshua W. Murfree, who has resigned to take the position as superintendent of the Daugherty County School System in Albany, effective June 7. Murfree was named athletics director in April 2007, after serving a year as interim director. He was also administrative chief of staff and interim vice president for Student Affairs. AA Thomasville, Ga. native, Williams earned his degrees from the University of Georgia.
