The Georgia Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. Holds Annual Convention
The Savannah chapter of the Georgia Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. will host the convention on June 18 - 20, 2010 at the Savannah Hilton Garden Inn - Midtown, 5711 Abercorn Street.
The Savannah chapter and its state affiliates are members of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. (NACWC). The NACWC is one of the oldest women's organizations in the world.
The NACWC was organized in 1896 in Washington, DC. Its objectives includes: to work for the economic, moral, religious, and social welfare of women and children.
The Savannah chapter of the Federation of Colored Women's Clubs has a long and distinguished history of service. It was founded in 1917 under the leadership of Mrs. Rebecca Stiles Taylor, who served as the first president.
During the early years, the Savannah chapter provided financial support for funding the position an African-American nurse at the Chatham County Health Department ( before the start of the Community Chest, later United Way)). One of the most notable contributions was a key benefactor for purchase of the property at Greenbriar's Windy Play school, located at 429 Tattnall Street.
The Savannah chapter is a life member of the NAACP, and supports Wesley Community Centers, Inner City Night Shelter, Greenbriar's Children Center, the Sickle Association of Savannah, the Economic Opportunity Authority, and others.
The public is invited to attend the Mass meeting on Friday, June 18th at 6:00 PM at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1008 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. Reverend Michael S. Stamps is pastor. Reverend Stamps will be the keynote speaker. The Savannah chapter welcomes its state affiliates to Savannah “the Hostess City of the South”. Please contact Mrs. Parnell M.
