What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an American holiday honoring African American heritage. It commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, and is recognized as a state holiday in 36 states of the United States. Celebrate Juneteenth with these local events:

-Juneteenth Family Day, Jepson Center, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. (see above)

-The Daughters of Mary Magdalene & The Brotherhood Presents: The Juneteenth Festival- 38th Street Park- 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM (see page 6)
