Miami Transfer
Rikiah Gatlin has transferred to Savannah State from Miami (FL). Gatlin has been attending classes at SSU since January and should be eligible to play for the Lady Tigers after the fall semester. The 6-2 center from Ft. Campbell, Kentucky was an all-state honorable mention and all-region player at Christian County High where she averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds her senior year.
Hedderly Earns
Softball Honor
Savannah State softball player Madison Hedderly was named as the Co- Freshman of the Year on the 2010 Division I All-Independent softball team. Hedderly shared the honor with Brook Short of Longwood. A freshman, Hedderly was also named to the all-independent team as an infielder and pitcher. The Dublin, Ohio native had a batting average of .330 during the 2010 season. Hedderly also led the team in hits (36), home runs (5) and slugging percentage (.532).
Wallace Named
Interim AD Phillip Wallace, Jr. has been named the interim athletics director at Miles College. Wallace replaces Percy Caldwell who recently left to become the athletic director at Fort Valley State. In addition to serving as interim AD, Wallace will continue as head women's basketball, volleyball and cross county coach. A Savannah native and a Savannah State graduate, Wallace has also coached at SSU, Morris Brown and Andrew College. While at SSU (1990-96), Wallace put together a 105-38 record.
Edwards Coaching
at South Aiken
Former Savannah State
defensive line coach Allen Edwards has landed on his feet and will be the new defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at South Aiken High in South Carolina. Edwards spent two years at SSU. Prior to coaching at SSU, Edwards worked at Lexington (SC) High and North Atlanta High and Furman, his alma mater.
