Sports with Walter Moore
Amara Jones placed 7th in the women's 400m race with a time of 53.01 to earn a spot in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon. Jones was one of three Savannah State athletes that competed in the Div. I East Regional May 26-29 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Participating but failing to make the national meet were Sharonda Redfield (women's triple jump) and Eric Plump (men's 100m and 200m). Jones also ran in the women's 200m but failed to qualify for the nationals.
SSU Athletic Hall Of Fame
Adds Ten
Savannah native and former Savannah State multisport athlete Frankie Harper was one of 10 new inductees into the Savannah State Athletic Hall of Fame on May 28 in Tiger Arena. Also inducted were Lee Blitch, Orlando Dean, Doug Grant, Casey Grigley, Mabel Sanders Heath, Leo Richardson, Shannon Sharpe, Tim Walker and Ted Wright.
Former SSU president Dr. Julius Scott was the keynote speaker. Grigley and Sharpe were unable to attend but their awards were accepted by Frank Ellis, Jr. and William Hall respectively.
Many former SSU greats showed up to witness the event such as Charlie Smith, Ronald Booker, Carl Crump as well as former SSU football coach Darryl McNeil who is now coaching at Clark
Atlanta.
Montgomery Leaves SSU Staff
Savannah State offensive line coach John Montgomery has decided to leave SSU for personal reasons. Montgomery said he has a son who is about to enter high school and he feels he needs to be a full-time father.
For the past two years, Montgomery has been commuting to Columbia, SC to see his family on weekends.The 55 year old Poteau, Oklahoma native played football at Prairie View A&M but received his degree from Oklahoma State in 1976. "I have enjoyed my time at SSU," he said.
Kelley Playing Summer League
Baseball
Savannah State outfielder Dexter Kelley is playing summer league baseball with the Fayetteville (NC) SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League. The 6-2, 205 Atlanta native batted .386 and led SSU in stolen bases and runs batted in and was second on the team in runs, hits, doubles and home runs.

Wildcats Return
The Savannah Wildcats Basketball team of the Continental Basketball League returns to Savannah after a successful road trip for three games. On Sunday, June 6 at 5pm they will host the Wilmington (NC) Sea dogs, on Thursday, June 10 at 7pm the Birmingham Sabers and on June 11 another rematch against Wilmington at 7pm. All games will be played at the Beach High School gymnasium. Tickets are $5 adults and $3 for children.
Lamont Morena owns the Wildcats team, and Savannah's own Larry "Gator" Rivers of Beach High and Harlem Globetrotters is the head coach. All players are from local high schools, and colleges from the Coastal Empire.
