Walter Moore Walter Moore SSU Baseball Has Another Losing Season

Savannah State dropped a three-game weekend series to visiting North Carolina A&T and for the third yar in a row ended the season with a losing record. The Aggies held off SSU 8-6 on May 14 and swept the Tigers 11-3 and 8-5 on May 15. Michael Allegretti struck out six batters and Jonathan Ross hit two home runs in the May 14 setback. Ross hit a pair of doubles in the first game of the May 15 double-header while Dexter Kelley, Matt Nowacki and John Arnold all had two hits in the second game. SSU ends the season with a 24-26 record and a fivegame losing skid.

Jones, McCoy Set SSU Track Records

Amara Jones broke her own record in the women's 200m while Tyrone McCoy set a new school mark in the men's 800m for Savannah State. SSU participated in the Georgia tech Invitational on May 15 in Atlanta. Jones had a time of 23.90 for a 13th place finish and McCoy finished 33rd with his time of 1:53.13. Other SSU participants had personal best performances at the meet such as Aleah Hordges (400m), Eric Plump (200m), Etchion Assinzo (800m) and Ruben Isreal-McBee (5000m).

Green Joins ASU Staff

Former Savannah State football assiatant coach Greg Green recently joined the coaching staff at Alabama State. Green comes to ASU from Texas Southern. Green, who will coach special teams as well as work with the defensive line, joins former SSU assistant Craig Payne on the Hornets staff. Payne is the ASU director of football operations. Savannah State will play Alabama State in Montgomery on October 23.

Lady Warriors Win Season Opener

The Savannah Lady Warriors opened their season with a 66- 50 win over the Tallahassee Lady Thunder at Jenkins High School on May 15. Nicole Mealing came off the bench to score 15 points for Savannah while Veranda James and Raquel Collier added 10 points each.

FVSU Appoints New AD

Fort Valley State University has named Dr. Percy "Chico" Caldwell as the Wildcat’s new director of athletics. Most recently, Caldwell served as consultant to the president and interim director of athletics at Miles College. The Miles College graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology/ psychology, a master’s in health, physical education and recreation at the University of Alabama- Birmingham, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration at Iowa State University. Caldwell begins at FVSU June 1 and replaces Wilson Gosier who announced his return to retirement four months ago.
