Walter Moore Walter Moore SSU Athletes Earn Degrees

Thirty-six former and current Savannah State student-athletes were presented with college degrees on May 8 during SSU's commencement at Tiger Arena. Zachry Gelow (golf) and Rashad Jackson (football) earned graduate degrees. Receiving undergraduate degrees were Dexter Hampton (football), Bjorn Bohley (basketball), O'Bryan Clemons (track), Vonnetta Epps (golf), Willie Hall (football), Anthony Bowden (football), Brittany Davis softball), Brittney Lollis (softball), Reginald May (football), Dwayne Ruff (football), Danielle Richardson (volleyball), Tyra Seagraves (softball), Ivy Smith (basketball), Nathan Carr (football), Joseph Flegler (basketball), Marcus Darrisaw (football), Timothy Hardy (basketball), Andrew Mendez (baseball), Ashley Pierce (softball), Javares Taylor (football), Brandon Miller (football), Jovonni Shuler (basketball), Sadie Sellow (track), Rachel West (softball), Terrence Kirkland (football), James Bawlson (football), Alfonce McKinney III (basketball), Peter Glenn (football), Daniel Studdard (football), Ruth Tilus (tennis), Dominique Clark (football), Keisha Barkley (softball), Jerome Temple (football), Ajmal Gordon (basketball), and Warren Washington III (football).

Virginia Tech Shuts Out SSU

The Savannah State baseball team played 16th ranked Virginia Tech on May 8 and 9 and came away scoreless in each game. The Hokies won 12-0 on May 8 and 7-0 on May 9. The Tigers played well in the early innings but VT broke the game open with home runs. Despite the losses, Michael Allegretti and Mark Sherrod both pitched well for SSU (24-23).

Jones Sets SSU Track Record

Amara Jones set a new Savannah State track record in the 200m at the Georgia Invitational on May 8 in Athens. Jones had a time of 24.10 and finished in 5th place. Jones was 3rd in the 400m race. Aleah Hordges was 2nd in the women's 400m and Sharona Redfield was 5th in the triple jump while Eric Plump was 4th in the men's 100m and 5th in the 200m race. Ruben Isreal- McBee was 4th in the men's 3000m race.

SSU Women's Basketball Earns Honor

The Savannah State women’s basketball team were ranked among the best in the nation when the final Division I statistics were released by the NCAA recently. As a team, SSU led the nation in 3-point field goal defense at 24.1 percent, beating out 2009-10 tournament champion Connecticut (24.3%). During the season, SSU ranked 19th in scoring defense, surrendering 55.5 points a game. The Lady Tigers best defensive effort came against Columbia where they only gave up 21 points.
