Walter Moore Tigers Down

Norfolk State Savannah State won two of three games from Norfolk State over the weekend. It took 10 innings but SSU prevailed with a 7-5 win over the Spartans on April 30 as the Tigers scored two runs in the extra inning. After dropping the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, on May 1, SSU bounced back with a 9-1 win in the second affair as Jonathan Ross had three hits and scored twice. SSU (24- 21) and travels back to Virgina to play Virginia Tech in a three game series May 8 & 9.

SSU Softball Ends

Season With Win The Savannah State softball team ended their 2010 season with a 5-3 victory over South Carolina State at the Paulson Complex on April 29. Freshman Madison Hedderly led the way with a two-run home run while striking out six batters on the mound. Brittney Lollis added two hits and two runs for SSU (18- 23).

SSU Basketball

Inks Three The Savannah State men's basketball team signed three players to scholarships for the 2010-11 season. New to the SSU campus will be Chris Spears (6-8, 225) from Turner County High School in Ashburn, GA where he averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds this past season; Jyles Smith (6-8, 215) from Creekside HS in Fairburn, GA where he averaged 10 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.5 blocks his past season; and Stephen Wilson (5-11, 165) from Mt. Zion HS in Jonesboro, GA where he produced 20 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game during the 2009-10 season.

Athletics Banquet Savannah State held its annual athletics banquet on April 28 in the Savannah Ballroom in the King-Frazier Student Center on the SSU campus. Once again the affair was sponsored by the SSU athletics department, SSU Student- Athlete Advisory Committee and the SSU Community Booster Club. Earning Most Valuable Player awards were Shawannda McClain (volleyball); Shawannda McClain and Shannon Howard (women’s tennis); Madisonb Hedderly (softball); Erika Wheatley (cheerleader); Amara Jones (sprint award, women’s track); Sharonda Redfield (field event award, women’s track); Amber Hughes (field event, women’s track); Eric Plump (sprint award, men’s track); Darrius Baker (sprint award, men’s track); Tyrone McCoy (distance award, men’s track); Shawn Souvenir (field event award, men’s track); Vonnetta Epps (women’s golf); Courtney Long (women’s basketball); Patrick Hardy (men’s basketball); Dexter Kelley (baseball); Jonathan Ross (baseball); Deleon Hollinger (offensive, football) and Antwan Allen (defensive, football).
