Second At Penn
Relays
Savannah State's track team participated in the 116th Penn Relays on April 22-24 and came away with three top ten finishes. Sharonda Redfield was second in the women's triple jump (12.53m) while Amber Hughes had a leap of 11.95m in the same event and placed seventh. Shawn Sovnenier represented the SSU men in the triple jump and also finished seventh with a leap of 14.59m. The women's 4x200m (32nd), 4x400m (42nd) and 4x100m (46th) also ran. The SSU men's sprint medley relay team was 20th and the 4x400m relay team was 37th.
FAMU Sweeps Lady Tigers
Florida A&M swept a double header from Savannah State in softball action on April 24. The Rattler won the opener 6-0 and completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. FAMU held Savannah State to one hit in the first game and just two hits in the second game. Tiffany Taylor hit a two-run double for SSU (17-21) in the second game.
Tigers Down Edward Waters
Savannah State swept a double header from Edward Waters in Jacksonville on April 20. Jonathan Ross hit a two-run home run in the first game and Mark Sherrod struck out eight batters in the nightcap as Savannah State won 4-3 and 8-4. SSU lost a three-game weekend series at North Carolina A&T on April 24 and 25. The Aggies jumped out to a 12-0 and went on to win 18-3 in the first game and completed the sweep with a 18-6 win in the nightcap. SSU (22-20) lost the final game of the series 13-6 despite a home run from Ross and a three hit performance from Julius Green.
Armstrong, Green Wins ASU Awards
Jonathan Armstrong, a senior defensive back at Albany State and Frederick Green, a senior linebacker, received awards at the 40th annual Albany State All-Sports Banquet on April 20. Armstrong, who had 48 tackles for the Rams in 2009, received the Most Improved Defensive Player Award while Green, who had 49 tackles, received the Best Linebacker Award.
