Join us on Elba Island on April 14, 2010!

In 2008, Southern LNG at Elba Island and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project came together to provide local educators with the opportunity to learn more about energy, liquefied natural gas, and energy in their local community.

Now in its second year, the program has trained over 40 educators and provided hands-on classroom curriculum and kits.

On April 14, 2010, Elba Island welcomes teachers from across the Savannah-Chatham County area to come learn about the forms of energy and energy transformations, renewable and nonrenewable resources and energy conservation while touring and learning about Savannah's local energy resource - the Liquified Natural Gas facility at Elba.

What's provided to teachers? Substitute reimbursement is provided to the school district/school. Hands-on kits and curriculum for teaching energy transformations are provided to participants. Breakfast and lunch too! All materials are aligned to Georgia standards and the day is fun filled and active!

Join us on April 14 at Elba Island. Pre-registration is required. Visit www.need.org/calendar to register.

Elba Island is an existing LNG import terminal located on Elba Island, in Chatham County, Georgia, five miles downstream from Savannah.

It was built by Sonat, Inc., based in Birmingham, Alabama for its Southern Natural Gas division.

The initial authorization for the Elba Island facility was issued in 1972.

LNG shipments ceased during the first half of 1980.

On March 16, 2000, the project received Commission authorization to re-commission and renovate the LNG facilities.

The mission of the National Energy Education Development Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multisided energy education programs.

NEED works with energy companies, agencies and organizations to bring balanced energy programs to the nation's schools with a focus on strong teacher professional development, timely and balanced curriculum materials, signature program capabilities and turn-key program management.
