SSU Women Fall To 9-19
The Savannah State women's basketball team fell to 9-19 on the season with losses to Virginia Tech and Longwood last week. SSU led Virginia Tech 23-21 at halftime of February 11 but lost the game 41-68. Mattisha Mangum led SSU with 10 points. Longwood defeated the Lady Tigers 79-48 on Feb 13. Mangum tossed in 14 points to lead SSU.
Savannah State Starts Softball Season
Savannah State started their 2010 softball season last week. The Lady Tigers started the season with a doubleheader loss at Alabama State on February 11 by scores of 9-3 and 8-0. SSU hosted the SSU Softball Classic on Feb. 13 & 14. The Lady Tigers defeated Fort Valley State 5-4 on Feb. 13 and defeated Edward Waters 9-0 and Clark Atlanta 12-2 on Feb. 14. SSU lost to Fort Valley State 11-10 in nine innings to close the tournament.
Wallace, Gaines Join Hall of Fame
Former Savannah State athletes Michael Wallace and James Gaines were inducted into the Effingham County High School Athletics Hall of Fame on February 6. Wallace graduated from ECHS in 1986 and was the team MVP his senior year. Wallace played defensive back at Savannah State where he was a four-year starter. He also served as a SSU coach in football and track. Gaines graduated from ECHS in 1973 and played basketball at SSU for two years. While at ECHS, Gaines tied a school record with 18 rebounds per game, while averaging 10 assists and scoring 26.4 points per game as a point guard. His senior season, Gaines led the Rebels to a region championship.
