Savannah Philharmonic To Donate Proceeds to Benefit Local Charities
The Savannah Philharmonic Chorus & Orchestra will present four checks to local charities at a special presentation on February 4, 2010 at 12:30 p.m.
Members of the media are encouraged to attend the check presentation at Savannah Philharmonic's office located at 30 W. Broughton Street, Suite 205. The presentation will benefit four area charities by donating a portion of the proceeds from their latest concert, “Carols in the Cathedral,” which took place this past December at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
“Our purpose at Savannah Philharmonic is not only to foster the appreciation of music in the Savannah area, but to commit ourselves to the betterment of our community by helping other organizations that contribute in their own ways to making this a better place to live,” said Peter Shannon, conductor and Artistic Director for the Philharmonic.
Half of the proceeds from the $100 ticket sales will be presented to the following charities: All Walks of Life (AWOL), Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Social Apostolate, and Alzheimer's Association of the Coastal Empire.
“It is unusual for a seemingly unrelated charitable organization to donate back to other charitable organizations,” said Shannon, “but we are proud to say that this is the Savannah Philharmonic's second donation to help others within the past six months, and we are planning for another benefit concert in April.”
The Savannah Philharmonic Corporation, formed in August 2008 by local music enthusiasts, serves as the parent company for the chorus and orchestra. Widely known for its range in music, from a capella Baroque to rock and pop standards, The Savannah Philharmonic relies heavily on ticket sales, member dues, and the generosity of patrons and sponsors to further their pursuit of music in an environment where orchestras are struggling to survive. As a 501(c)3, all contributions to the Philharmonic are taxdeductible.
