David Smart, Jr. Passes Away

David Smart, Jr. David Smart, Jr. David Edward Smart, Jr., "Junior" passed away peacefully in Loma Linda, California on January 21, 2010. He was born July 25, 1934 in Savannah. Georgia and was the son of the late David E. Smart, Sr. and Alberta Patrick Smart. David attended Florence Street School, Haven Home School and Beach High School in Savannah. He later moved to Los Angeles, California where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. After High School he joined the U.S. Air Force he married the late Jean Orr of Savannah. He later moved to New York City to pursue a career in Interior Design. Upon completion of his degree, he returned to Savannah and was hired as the first black interior design salesperson for Buck's Furniture Store.

While in Savannah, Smart worked in the family motel/restaurant businesses and was owner/operator of Safari Restaurant on west 52nd Street. He later married Delores Johnson. The couple eventually migrated to Los Angeles, California where they had two children David Smart III and Samara (Smart) Herard.

Surviving family and friends: Children: Valetta S. Johnson, (Ed) David Smart III, Samara S. Herard (Carl); Grandchildren: Gavin, Raymond, Bryson, and Cameron. Sister: Irene Smart Booker, Sister-In-Law Cheryl Johnson, Nephews: Xavier Booker (Evangeline), Andre Booker(Dana) Grace Smart Jeffrey, Aunt: Irving Jones. Cousins: Bertha J. Pinkney, Vaughnette Goode- Walker, Elizabeth Ladson, Robert Patrick, Jr., Norma J0ean Daniels (Edward), Paulette Patrick, Nathaniel E. Stewart (Eleanor), Eugene B. Mulford, Lorine Davis, Theodore Roberson, Jerry Roberson, Loree Hucks, Rosemary Atkins, and the Wilson and Shepard family of Savannah. His extended family:Georgia and Willie Jennings (Tops Diamons, Kia and Patricia).

He also had a host of grand nephews, grand nieces and cousins. Friends: Patricia Templeton and Diana Batiste, Ginger Hayes, of California; Anderson Macklin of Savannah and Mrs. Helen Alfred.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 11am at the Juniper Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church, 7347 Juniper Avenue, Fontana, California. Remembrances can be sent to the care of his sister Irene Booker,703 West 52nd Street, Savannah, Ga, 31405. 912-856-8412..
