Beach Institute Presents: Nothing Is As It Seems, Works by Malaika Favorite

Woman Looking for Herself On Sunday, February 7, 2010, the Beach Institute will open the first exhibit in the 2010 series, A New Vision for the Arts.

Nothing Is As It Seems, is an exhibit of works by artist and writer, Malaika Favorite. The opening reception will take place at 3pm in the West Gallery of the Beach Institute with a gallery talk by the artist. Additionally, the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, in conjunction with the King- Tisdell Cottage Foundation, will salute local artist Ligel Lambert with the opening of an exhibit featuring his works in the second floor gallery.

NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS is a series of works inspired in part by the poem, WE WEAR THE MASK by Paul Laurence Dunbar, and by the artist’s continuing study of the choices people make and the consequences that result from those choices.

The latest collection by Ms. Favorite, this series of 3- D mixed media pieces and wall pieces based on “Choices and Consequences” emphasizes making choices and possible results. The works are designed to promote discussion about these choices we make in life.

Ms. Favorite is an artist and writer living in Augusta, Georgia. She received her BFA and MFA from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She has shown nationally in a number of group and solo exhibitions and she was recently commissioned to produce her second large scale mural, West End Remembers, for the City of Atlanta. Her work is found in collections throughout the United States including: Emory University Goizueta Business School, Absolut Vodka collection, Morris Museum of Art, Augusta GA, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA., Alexandria Museum of Art, Alexandria, LA., The Coca Cola Company, Atlanta, GA., Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta, GA, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, OH.
