Can Energy Drinks Be Dangerous?
Carolyn Guilford, CNC
Have you noticed this new craze, the energy drink? Many today are looking for a burst of energy, or to lift their mood, and turning to the little cans and bottles called Energy Drinks.
It may seem innocent enough according to the advertising. Burst of energy, vitamins and herbs, sugar. Nothing unusual, right? But perhaps we should take a closer look.
Would you be surprised to know these drinks have become very popular with teens and many young adults? And has become a multi billion dollar industry?
Remember when Gatorade was a sports drink for athletes, to give them the salts and fluids they lost during sports training and in the games, then went main stream. These energy drinks may be an up grade of the sports drink.
After drinking the energy drink, and getting the desired effect, that mood boost or burst of energy, the energy crash is likely to follow.
The cycle begins with another energy drink, to get past that crash. The habit begins. Two or three drinks per day. A poll I took recently included college students who say they like the drinks because they also boost their memory during study at exam time, and often get into the habit of drinking 3 to 4 per day, sometimes for days at a time.
This new trend is causing great concern for family members when their youngsters present at the emergency room with a wide variety of complaints such as nausea, dehydration, palpitations, sweating, insomnia and abnormal heart rhythms. Some have had heart attacks and died, especially after adding alcohol to the mix. (Never Drink Alcohol When Drinking Any Energy Drink).
Energy drinks may contain mega doses of caffeine, sugar, and a mix of herbs that can be dangerous to certain persons, young, older, persons with diabetes, heart disease, and other health concerns.
Many persons may not be aware of health issues until the stress of palpitations or an abnormal heart rhythm or dehydration sends them to the ER. Boost your energy in a healthy way, with a healthy lifestyle, good diet, lots of water, exercise every day, and a good nights sleep, every night. If you need something more, try a one ingredient supplement such as Ginseng, an herb known to increase energy, relieve stress, and increase memory. Ginkgo biloba, also for memory enhancement. Milk Thistle to detoxify the liver and allow it to function better. L-Carnitine, an amino acid which helps rev-up metabolism and increase energy.
Then add a really good multi vitamin supplement (liquid) for an over-all nutritional boost to the body’s cells.
Give your body a break from caffeine, sugar and the mix of herbs which may not work well together especially with medications you may already be taking. Save your money and maybe your life. Nutrition Consulting Saves Lives!
