Walter Moore Walter Moore SSU Runs Over Livingstone

Savannah State's trip to Greenville, SC was delayed about an hour because of mechanical problems with one of the team buses but when game time rolled around it was no stopping the Tigers as Justin Babb rushed for 229 yards and a touchdown to lead SSU to a season-opening 34-12 victory over Livingstone (0- 2) in the 5th HBCU Classic on September 5 played in before a crowd of 2,100 fans. The Tigers rolled up 483 yards of offense. Rashard Russell blocked a punt late in the first quarter that led to a safety and a 2-0 SSU lead. Touchdown runs by Kurvin Curry (2 yards) and Babb (81 yds) gave SSU a 15-0 advantage. A 32-yard field goal by Derek Williams and a 17- yard touchdown pass from AJ DeFilippis to Deron Talley gave the Tigers a 25-0 halftime edge. A 22- yard FG by Williams and a 15-yard scoring run by Daniel Heslop closed out the SSU scoring. Chris Asbury had nine tackles for the SSU defense which held LC to 28 yards rushing and had six sacks.

Tigers Win Cross Country Meet

The Savannah State men's cross country team won the JU Short Course Duals hosted by Jacksonville on September 4. SSU defeated Bethune-Cookman, Jacksonville and Stetson. Tyrone McCoy finished second overall while Ruben Isreal-McBee was third. Sadie Sellow finished 11th to pace the SSU women, who defeated Bethune but lost to Jacksonville, North Florida and Stetson.

Shaw Shocks Bethune- Cookman

Travis Robinson threw for a touchdown and Ray Williams ran for another as Division II Shaw shocked Bethune- Cookman 20-6 in Daytona Beach, FL. Shaw lewd 17- 0 at the half and 20-0 in the third before the Wildcats scored their only touchdown with just over 13 minutes left in the game. Bethune had seven turnovers and fumbled twice inside the Bears 10 yard line.

'Bama State Holds Off Concordia

Chris Mitchell passed for 242 yards and four touchdowns to lead Alabama State to a 38-33 win over Concordia-Selma in Montgomery, AL. Concordia led 6-0 before ASU scored the next 31 points. Concordia rallied back but fell short as ASU stopped them at the ASU 26 late in the fourth.

Stillman Cancels Game Because Of Flu

Stillman canceled its home opener against Clark Atlanta because of swine flu.Stillman was scheduled to play Clark Atlanta on September 6 in Tuscaloosa. But Tigers football coach L.C. Cole says he noticed some of his players were having flu-like symptoms after a morning workout. Cole says he felt compelled to cancel the game after he learned that about 37 of his players had become sick. The coach says he doesn't know how everyone became sick. Both schools are unable to reschedule the game for another date, so Stillman had to forfeit the contest. Stillman and Clark Atlanta compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
