Chatham County Youth Commission Announces Graduates
      On Friday, June 26, 2009, during the Chatham County Commission Meeting, the Chatham County Youth Commission presented their 2009 graduates, the recipients of the 2009 Beverly M. Whitehead Award and the recipient of the Brandon Brown Youth Commissioner of the Year Award. 2009 boasts one of the largest graduation classes in the 17 year history of the Youth Commission.

CAT Announces Holiday Schedule
      Chatham Area Transit announced today that buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Friday, July 3, and on a Saturday schedule on Independence Day, July 4th. On July 3rd, CAT's administrative offices, 900 East Gwinnett Street, and CAT Central, 124 Bull Street, will be closed for business and pass sales. Telephone schedule information will not be available. On July 4th, the 900 E. Gwinnett Street office will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for pass sales and information phone lines will also be open.

Education and Training Key to Economic Growth
      The Great Recession is reaping a bitter harvest of job losses and deep budget cuts throughout Georgia’s public education and training system. Although federal stimulus dollars are providing some temporary relief, more than $1 billion in state funding has been slashed from Georgia’s K-12 and postsecondary education budgets. Budget shortfalls have forced educational leaders to institute furloughs and/or lay-offs. “Non-essential” classes in music and foreign languages are disappearing.

City of Savannah to Receive HUD Grants
      Congressman Jack Kingston announced that the City of Savannah is the recipient of a series of grants from U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The city will receive a community development block grant (CDBG), an emergency shelter grant (ESG) and a HOME grant to support affordable housing. “The money enables the city to give continued support to the agencies in the area that support that mission which is even more important during this tough economic period”,Congressman Kingston said.

      Leadership Savannah graduated 42 people at a ceremony held on Thursday, June 18 at the Savannah Yacht Club. This unique program provides the opportunity for its participants to develop an awareness of community successes and problems as well as the knowledge to help meet the challenge of the future.

Glynn County Confirms Case of Novel H1N1 Influenza Virus
      The Glynn County Health Department has received confirmation from the Georgia Division of Public Health that a positive case of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus has been identified in a Glynn County resident. The 9-year-old female recovered at home. “We are investigating how the individual may have become exposed to the novel H1N1 virus,” said Robert Thornton, Coastal Health District Epidemiologist. “No close contacts of the child have reported showing any symptoms of the virus.”

The Wiz Comes to the Lucas Theater
      The City of Savannah’s Cultural Arts Theatre announced that it will be presenting its summer "big stage" production of The Wiz at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts, July 17, 18, 24 and 25. This new musical version of the classic 'Wizard of Oz' by L. Frank Baum, features a script by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. Full of exciting new musical arrangements by musical director Gary Swindell and stunning choreography by Muriel Miller of Abeni Cultural Arts, this is The Wiz as you have never seen it!

Tompkins Class of 1959 holds 50th Class Reunion
      The Tompkins High School class of 1959 celebrated its 50th class reunion. On Wednesday, May 27th, we had a Meet and Greet session and registration. Thursday, May 28th, a teacher's appreciation ceremony was held with Mr. Raleigh Bryant, Mrs. Catherine Dwight Redding and Mrs. Janie O. Alexander. Each was given a certificate of appreciation. A memorial service was held in remembrance of our deceased class mates with family and friends in attendance. Friday, May 29th, we enjoyed a banquet and dance with the honorable Priscilla Thomas as the speaker.

Smith Completes Residency at Emory University School of Medicine
      Dr. Tessa Smith is the daughter of Edward and Theresa Smith of Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Smith attended Pulaski Elementary School, DeRenne and Bartlett Middle Schools, and was the Salutatorian and medical magnet honor graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School Class of 1997. From the start of high school she had the dream to become a physician. She received inspiration from her Pastors, Bishop and Mother Myles A. Latimer, at Genesis New Life Apostolic Faith Church to attend Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Townsley Unit Recognized for Church and Community Service
      For the second consecutive year Townsley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Savannah, Georgia was named the Sons of Allen Georgia Conference 2008-2009 Unit of The Year at this year’s African Methodist Episcopal Church Georgia Conference held in Waycross, Georgia. The Townsley Chapel A.M.E. Church Sons of Allen, a unit of men in ministry, continued to put forth much effort to provide service to those in need at its church and in our local community.

Citizens Fight for New School
      Dr. Thomas Lockamy, Julie Gerbsch, Fred Williams and more than 200 residents attended the Port Wentworth City Hall meeting June 25th . Members of the community are joining forces to encourage city leaders to bring a new school to the area. Local homebuilder, Fred Williams, has donated 5 acres of land to West Chatham Preparatory Academy , a charter high school scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.

New Website Launched to Honor French Speaking Savannahians
      A press conference was held Wednesday, June 24th, in the conference room at the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) building to announce the launch of a new website, www.sejoursavannah. com, which is written entirely in French. Sponsored in part by the Coastal Heritage Society, it features a history of the contributions of Frenchspeaking people in Savannah (historians estimate that at one point in the 19th century, one in three Savannahians was a native French speaker!), as well as an interactive map showing sites of interest to French visitors.

NAACP Presents Petitions Asking for New Trial for Troy Davis
      A multiracial group of faith and civic community leaders delivered over 10,000 signatures from Chatham County residents to Chatham County District Attorney Larry Chisolm's office on Monday, calling on the DA to take action to prevent the execution of Troy Davis and re-open his trial. As more people in the community raise their voices for a new trial, the Associated Press reported Sunday that at least 4 of the 12 jurors in Davis' original trial have said in interviews or affidavits that they are having doubts about the justness of the death sentence.

Savannah Alpha and Omega Chapters Battle for a Cause
      Beta Phi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Mu Phi chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity, Inc., both of Savannah, Georgia, faced up again June 6, 2009 to compete in their annual Homeruns for Hunger Softball Game to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. Last year the Alpha's were the victors in game one and the Omega's in game two. This year the Omega's came dressed and ready for the challenge.

Millers Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary
      Edward G. Miller, Sr. and Loretta Hagins Miller celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary 4P.M. June 8, 2009 at the Mulberry Inn in Savannah. Over one hundred forty guests attended the celebration. Juanita Quinn Jackson served as mistress of ceremony, and Reverend Desmond Walker, pastor, Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church, delivered the invocation. Remarks were made by Rosalie Holmes Stroman, cousin of the bride; Prince A. Jackson, Jr., friend of the couple; and Gregory Hagins, brother of the bride.

AARP Moves to Increase Black and Latino Membership
      As the American population continues to brown, an increasing number of organizations are making calculated strides in an effort to ensure that the diversity of their membership mirrors the diversity of the nation. One such organization is AARP, the premier advocacy group for older Americans. The largest of its kind in the country, AARP ironically has a membership base that is 88.5 percent White.

SSU Baseball Team Picks Up Post Season Honor
      The Savannah State baseball team picked up a post-season honor as the Tigers led Division I in stolen bases. As a team, SSU baserunners stole 169 bases in 207 attempts. The Tigers also led the nation in stolen bases per game with 3.31. Individually, three Savannah State players were ranked in the top 20 in stolen bases per game.
