Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission Seeks Community Input
      Throughout mid-July, the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission (GGCHCC) is conducting public engagement meetings to capture comments from Gullah/Geechee community members about how they want the GGCHCC to recognize and manage places, things, and traditions considered important to them. Savannah State Students attend Summer Science Intern Program
      Two Savannah State University students are attending the new Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP), a summer science intern program designed to promote diversity in the Woods Hole, Mass., science community while giving students real-world exposure to the issues facing today’s scientists.

HUD Receives Record Number of Discrimination Claims
     WASHINGTON (NNPA) - More than 10,000 housing discrimination complaints were filed in 2008, according to a report released last week by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The report, which is produced for Congress each year, shows 44 percent of the 10,552 cases were filed by persons with disabilities. Thirty- five percent, or 3,699, of the complaints alleged discrimination by African Americans and other people of color based on race.

Students to Give Local Homes a Facelift
      In the midst of tough and uncertain economic times, more than 23,000 students have made a decision to pay money out of their own pockets in order to help improve living conditions for people across the United States and Canada. “This will be a life changing week for all involved,” said John Bailey, Team Leader for World Changers. “The students who participate in World Changers will see that they can make a difference. And the residents whose homes are worked on see that the young people offer hope for our future.”

President Obama Unveils ‘United We Serve,’ Calls on All Americans to Commit to Volunteer Service
      In a video message, President Obama unveiled United We Serve, an extended call to service challenging all Americans to help lay a new foundation for growth in this country by engaging in sustained, meaningful community service. The initiative will be led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency dedicated to fostering service in communities across the country. Since his Inauguration, the President has called on all Americans to serve their communities and be a part of building a better future for our country.

SSU Collecting Final Data for Obesity Outreach Study
      Savannah State University Community Outreach Obesity Program (COOP) officials are calling on all project participants to take the second health screening at the St. Joseph’s/Candler African- American Health Information & Resource Center (AAHIRC), located at 1910 Abercorn St. Screening hours are 11:30- 6:30, Monday-Friday. Those who complete the screening process will be eligible for prizes and rewards, including a $50 drawing to be held on July 3.

Woodville -Tompkins Hall of Fame Association Presents Check to Savannah Silver Cheetahs
      The Woodville- Tompkins High Hall of Fame recently made a presentation to the Savannah Silver Cheetahs in the amount of $1000.00. The Woodville- Tompkins High School Hall of Fame Association, Inc. was started in 2003 to recognize the accomplishments of Wolverines to the school, the Savannah Community and to the communities where they presently reside. It recognizes the classes from 1950 to 1989. Each year the Hall of Fame Association gives charitable donations to organizations in our community to help meet the needs of youth.

Pace Selected for Membership in National Society of High School Scholars
      The National Society of High Scholars (NSHSS) recently announced that Johnson High School student Leron Pace from Savannah, Ga, was selected for membership. The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.

City’s 311 Line Extends Hours to Better Serve Citizens
      The City of Savannah has launched extended hours for its 311 Call Center, making it even more convenient for citizens to access City services. Citizens can now call 311 on their telephone from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday to request any nonemergency City service. Previously, the Center closed at 5 p.m. Citizens can also make a 311 service request 24 hours a day, seven days a week via www.savannahga. gov and clicking on "City Services" on the Home Page. Launched in 2006, 311 is designed to make City services more accessible to citizens.

      The Hungry Club Forum of Savannah, Inc. (HCFS) continued its community and economic development Roundtable and Open Forum at its monthly breakfast held on Saturday June 6, 2009, at 9:30 AM, in the Annex of the May Street YMCA. The presentation featured the HCFS Covenant X study group’s preliminary plan for “Closing the Racial Digital Divide” in Savannah-Chatham County.

City to hold Super Saturday Leadership Institute
      The City of Savannah will hold its "Super Saturday” Leadership Training Mini-Institute for community and neighborhood leaders Saturday, June 27 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street. The event is open to any city resident. Participants will acquire team building and communication skills and learn about the various programs and services available to assist families in our community. Workshops will be offered on Strategic Life Planning, Community Youth Programs, and Resolving Organization Conflict.

SONATA holds Annual Scholarship Luncheon
      Sponsors of New and Talented Artists, Inc. (SONATA) had their annual fundraiser scholarship luncheon on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Temple Of Glory. This event was well attended. The guests enjoyed some delicious food, great music and lots of prizes. The music was provided by Ricardo Ochoa Jazz trio featured guest soloists Roger Moss and Claire Frazier. Two of our own students Ida-Benson Ja Ja and Shandae Reese entertained the crowd with beautiful performances. We are so thankful to all of our supporters.

Georgia Ports Authority Donates Mobile Generator to American Red Cross
      The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and Big Red, Inc., a Taylor Machine Works heavy equipment retailer and service center, partnered to donate a mobile generator to the American Red Cross Savannah Chapter. GPA provided two decommissioned units that allowed Big Red, Inc. to build a mobile generator that is now capable of powering nearly one city block for the Red Cross.

The Savannah Hawks Athletic Ministry Participates in Basketball Tournament
      The Savannah Hawks Athletic Ministry has left the nest. On June 5th - 7th a few of our 16U boys combined with our l5U boys traveled to Fayetteville NC to participate in their 1st United States Basketball Association tournament. Although this was new territory for the team they knew the game was still played the same. After having the pregame talk the players said to the coach "we want 1st or nothing". The coaches responded “lets go get it.”

"Celebration of Service" Brings Together Savannah Business Professionals
      Buy Local Savannah, the Downtown Business Association, the Savannah Area Tourism Leadership Council and Savannah Waterfront Association joined forces on Thursday, June 18 for the 3rd Annual Celebration of Service at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center. This special tribute to customer service featured three service awards presentations and a keynote address by nationally acclaimed author and speaker Phillip Van Hooser who later shared more of his expansive knowledge at a specially designed workshop.
