Savannah Links Attend 40th Southern Area Conference
      The 40th Southern Area Conference of The Links, Incorporated was held May 13-17, 2009. The four day event took place at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, in Jacksonville, Florida. Members of The Bold City (FL) Chapter were perfect hostesses delivering southern hospitality with flair and finesse. The Savannah Chapter was well represented with twenty members in attendance. The conference started with the membership attending both programmatic and operational workshops.

ACLU Makes Call For Paycheck Fairness Act
      The American Civil Liberties Union marks the 46th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act with a call for the Senate to pass S. 182, the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that gives employees the legal tools needed to fight wage discrimination. Forty-six years ago – on June 10, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act, a law that prohibits wage discrimination. Unfortunately, over the last few decades, loopholes and weak remedies have watered down the Act’s effectiveness.

NAACP to hold Community Wide Mass Meeting
      The NAACP, National, State and Local offices, along with Rev. Matthew Southhall Brown, Sr., all area Churches, other local and National organizations, and concerned citizens are asked to come out and support this very important Community Wide Mass Meeting. A week of Prayer, Witnessing and Action will begin on Friday, June 19th to mobilize churches and citizens in Savannah and throughout the county. The MASS MEETING will begin at 6;00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Historic Bolton Street Baptist Church, 821 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

City to Join Statewide Recycling Campaign
      The City of Savannah joined a statewide campaign that uses humor and the absurd to promote the benefits of recycling. City officials kicked off the campaign at a news conference on Wednesday, June 10, at the transfer center operated by Savannah's recycling partner, Pratt Industries, located at 101 Kahn Industrial Court, Since the historic launch of the City's singlestream curbside recycling program in January, Savannah has collected over 5 million pounds of recyclables from Savannah's households.

Savannah Becomes a We Can!City
      The City of Savannah has launched We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition!), a fast-growing national movement of families and communities coming together to promote healthy weight in children ages 8-13 through improved food choices, increased physical activity and reduced screen time. We Can! is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem. In the US, nearly onethird of our youth are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. These extra pounds can add up to lifelong health problems.

NOAA’s Gray’s Reef to Host Youth Educational Summit
      NOAA’s Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, headquartered in Savannah, Ga., will host 40 students from across the nation this month during the National Association of Black Scuba Divers’ (NABS) Youth Educational Summit. The program’s goal is to develop young leaders through marine science.

CRCT Scores Increase in All Areas
     Test scores for Georgia’s elementary and middle school students improved in all areas this year, but most dramatically in the crucial subjects of mathematics and science. Students posted gains on all 14 of the Criterion- Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) in mathematics and science, all of which are aligned to Georgia’s more rigorous curriculum. “The 2009 CRCT results are very encouraging and show that our students are learning more advanced concepts and are able to apply that knowledge properly,” said State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox.

      The Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials (GABEO), in partnership with the Carver VIllage/Heights Mission Organization, and the Greenbriar Children’s Center will sponsor a Countywide Community Festival and Celebration on Saturday, June 20, at 6pm. The event will be held at the Kennedy Park, Carver Village, 905 Collat Street. Come and meet local, state, and federal officials, civil rights activists, educators, law enforcement, and youth advocates. This event is free and open to the public.

AWOL Sound Design Class Releases Third Album
      The students in AWOL’s sound design program, known as The P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. (The Positive Re-education Of Juveniles Everywhere Concerning The Streets), have completed the 22-week class and are about to celebrate their hard work and dedication with an album release party at the Lake Mayer Pavilion on June 26, from 4-7pm. The students, who range in age from 13-22 and come from all over the city, spent nearly six months learning about music history, creative writing, music production and engineering while creating the music that appears on the album.

They become better educated and are psychologically better grounded. Savannah 100 Sponsors Organ Donation Awareness
      Each year 19,000 Americans die while awaiting organ transplants. African-Americans constitute 35% of those awaiting kidney transplants. In the SE of the United States, more than 70 percent of all dialysis patients are African-American. These grim facts explain why the 100 Black Men of Savannah, in partnership with Life Link of Georgia and St. Joseph's/Candler Health Systems will sponsor a program on Organ Donor Awareness among African- Americans on Saturday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m. at the Jepson Center of the Arts, 207 West York St., Savannah.

Update on the Go Healthy Challenge
      After one week of healthy eating and exercising, the participants of the Go Healthy Challenge gathered at West Broad Street YMCA for the first weigh-in. Collectively the ladies lost fifty (50) pounds. AKAs lost .068% of “start” weight. Deltas lost .029% of start weight. Biggest losers for the AKAs were Patricia Mincey and Carol Bell, both losing 5.6 pounds. Leading the losers for the Deltas was Joyce Davis, losing 3.2 pounds.

Bradley Selected to Attend Congressional Leadership Conference
      Lawrence Bradley, Jr. a student at A.E. Beach High School, has been selected to attend the 2009 Congressional Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) on Engineering and Robotics sponsored by LeadAmerica. The CSLC is a college-accredited invitational leadership program for academically talented and promising young leaders from accross the United States and internationally. Lawrence will join other exceptional high school students with records of academic achievement who are invited to participate.

National HIV Testing Day
      Saturday, June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. Free, confidential testing, with anonymous results will be held here in Savannah. Testing begins at 9am until the last consumer exits. Testing will take place at My Brothaz HOME, Inc. 2111 Price Street Savannah, GA 31401- Free giveaways including food, drinks and other door prizes. HIV Testing and Counseling enables people with HIV to take steps to protect their own health and that of their partners, and helps people who test negative get information they need to stay uninfected.

Training Center Seeks to Close Digital Divide Between The Young, Not So Young
      The City of Savannah and the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday, June 9th from 4:30-6:30 at the Tremont Temple Baptist Church for the first Digital Divide Training Center along the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Montgomery Street Corridor. The first of its kind in the nation, this innovative program is bridging the digital divide by providing computer hardware, software, training opportunities and internet connectivity to those who might otherwise not have access to those resources.
