City seeking Eastside Photos and Documents

2009-06-03 / Social & Community News

The City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs is asking residents to lend photos and documents for its Eastside Documentation Project, a project aimed at broadening the historical record with an infusion of fresh voices, little know facts, and compelling historic photographs.

The City is seeking the following items for the project: -Back issues of Reflector. Published between 1940 and 1960 roughly, this African - American monthly was edited by Norman B. Elmore Sr. as a resource guide for local educators.

-Images of Powell Laboratory. Originally sited on Savannah State University’s campus, Powell Laboratory would expand from its initial incarnation as an elementary school to include more grades in the 1960s.

EDP staff is particularly interested in gathering images of students interacting with dignitaries, copies of student report cards, or programs from school events.

The Eastside Documentation Project represents the third preservation and education effort of this kind and follows closely upon the heels of successfully Low Land and the High Road, a City–published book that melded resident recollections and archival material into a visual journey through Savannah’s Woodville, West Savannah, and Hudson Hill neighborhoods.

Residents wishing to share items or ask additional questions should contact Michelle Hunter, project manager, at 651-6417 or via email mhunter@savannahga. gov.
