DeRenne Middle School Parters with Longshoremen’s Association and McDonald’s to Boost Student CRCT Scores
      DeRenne Middle School put some exciting plans in place for the week of CRCT. In an effort to improve the test scores of each student, the school council coordinated a special breakfast snack to be given to their 800 students before each morning of testing. The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) agreed to sponsor the first day of testing with sausage and butter biscuits from McDonald's Restaurant on Abercorn. Then McDonald's joined in this effort and offered 100 butter biscuits free, along with a beverage .

      The Learning Center at Senior Citizens, Inc. will sponsor a lecture, “Steel and Velvet Mind and Heart”: The Paradox of Lincoln’s Legacies, on Thursday, May 21, at 6pm at the Congregation Mickve Israel on Bull and Gordon Streets at Monterey Square. President Obama Launches Office of Public Engagement: A New Name, Mission for White House
      President Obama announced a new name and a new mission for the White House office charged with dealing most closely with the American people. The Office of Public Liaison is now the Office of Public Engagement.       On Friday, April 24, 2009 the Savannah Chatham Public School System’s ‘Career Expo and Leadership Workshops’ took place at Savannah Technical College. More than 30 local businesses and post secondary institutions were on hand to talk to approximately 200 11th and 12th grade students about career preparation and job opportunities.

Sears Announces Post Supreme Court Plans
      Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears will not be slowing down when she steps down from the Supreme Court of Georgia at the end of June. She recently announced she will join the law firm of Schiff Hardin, a nationallyrenowned firm based in Chicago. The law firm has nearly 400 lawyers and offices in seven major American cities, including Atlanta, where Chief Justice Sears' practice will be based. She will begin working there Oct. 15 of this year.

Chamber’s Small Business Awards Nominations Deadline Extended
      The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2009 Small Business Recognition Awards. The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, May 22. The Recognition Awards include Small Business of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Hospitality Small Business Owner of the Year and Helen V. Head Small Business Advocate of the Year. The awards presentation will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at the Small Business Banquet at 7 p.m. at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront immediately following the Small Business Trade Show.

Oglethorpe Charter School Celebrates Ten Years
      On Wednesday, May 13, Ogelthorpe Charter School observed its tenth anniversary with a program of reflection and celebration at the Lucas Theater. The program included greetings and reflections from Oglethorpe Charter School Governing Board members, past and present, as well as reflections from current and former students, teachers, performances by current and former students, and a finale performance from celebrated vocalist and Oglethorpe chorus teacher Huxie Scott.

Chatham County Health Department Names New Administrator
      Randy McCall, Ph.D., has been named new administrator of the Chatham County Health Department (CCHD). The announcement was made by Douglas Skelton, M.D., Health Director of the Coastal Health District, during today's Chatham County Board of Health meeting. McCall comes to the Chatham County Health Department from the Coastal Health District where he served as Program Manager. His duties included overseeing the State's programmatic and financial support for all programs within the eight counties.
