Walter Moore Walter Moore SSU Women Beat New

Jersey Tech

Lashara Smith scored 21 points to lead Savannah State to a 64-56 win over New Jersey Tech in the women's Independent Basketball Tournament in Orem, Utah on March 6. Courtney Long added 17 points while Alisha Nelson had 12 rebounds and 10 points. In the opening round on March 5, SSU fell to Chicago State 74-39. CSU scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back. Smith led SSU with 12 points while Long scored 10. In the third round, the Lady Tigers ended their season with a 76-60 setback to Longwood on March 7. SSU shot 68 percent from the floor in the first half but trailed 40-39. Longwood broke open a close game with a 17-3 run in the second half. Smith, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 17 points while Crissa Jackson scored 13 and Nelson had 13 rebounds. SSU ends the season with a 9-22 record.

SSU Softball Plays In

CAU Classic

The Savannah State softball team participated in the Clark Atlanta Classic March 6-7 in Atlanta. SSU played three games on March 6, losing to Fort Valley State 10-4, defeating Paine 8-1 and losing to Nova Southeastern 17- 0. On March 7, the Lady Tigers fell to Florida Tech 15-0 but bounced back to defeat CAU 6-5. Savannah State dropped a double header to North Carolina A&T on March 5 by scores of 12-2 and 10-5.

Tigers Lose To USCB

USC Beaufort broke open a close game with seven runs in the eighth inning in a 15-6 win over Savannah State on March 3 at Tiger Field. Brett Pointer hit a home run in the loss. SSU journeyed to Atlanta on March 4 where they split a double header with Morehouse, winning 7-4 and losing 4-3. Andrew Mendez had three RBI, two hits and scored twice in game one and Jordan Monico had two hits and two RBI in game two. The Tigers played at North Carolina Central on March 7 and lost a twin-bill, 9-6 and 3-2. David Washington had three hits including a three-run home run in the opener. On March 8, the SSU bats came alive as they defeated Central 21-7. Darien Campbell had four hits for the Tigers (5-7) while Dexter Kelley and Tristan Smith drove in four runs apiece. Shane Mathews pitched three scoreless innings in middle relief to get the win.

Relay Teams Shine At SSU Track Meet

The Savannah State women's 4x400m relay team won first place at the Tiger Open on March 7 at the SSU track. The women's 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams placed second in their races while the men's 4x200m team came in third. Also winning their events were Amara Jones who won the women's 400m race with a time of 58.25, Victoria Burch who won the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.78 and Eric Plump who captured the men's 100m race with a time of 11:01.
