Savannah State defeated Carver Bible College at Tiger Arena 103-44 on February 26. It was the first time since the 1998- 99 season that SSU put 100 points on the scoreboard. The Tigers, who shot 54.9 percent from the floor, were led by Rahasd Hassan's 18 points. Anthony Jones had 17 points, Arnold Louis added 16 points and 13 rebounds, Jovonni Shuler chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals while Pat hardy scored 10 points. Raye Bailey dished out 14 assists. SSU (14-14) out-rebounded Carver 59- 30 and as a team had 41 assists.
SSU Women Win
Senior Day The Savannah State women's basketball team held off Morris College 69-65 on February 28 at Tiger Arena. It was the last home game for SSU seniors Milan Johnson, Lashara Smith, Antoinette Williams and Patrice Robinson. With the game tied at 48, SSU went on a 14-5 run to take a nine point lead with just over two minutes left. Back-to-back 3- pointers by the visitors helped them keep the score close at the end. Smith scored 18 points for the lady Tigers (8- 20). Courtney Long added 15 points and Crissa Jackson scored 13. Savannah State fell to New Jersey Tech 68-41on the road on Feb. 24. NJIT led 17-14 at the half but scored 51 points in the second half. Smith had 12 points for SSU.
SSU Spring Sports
Baseball, softball and golf are in full swing on the Savannah State campus. The baseball team loss a double header to North Carolina A&T at Tiger Field on February 28 by scores of 5-2 and 6- 3. The softball team lost a double header to Oakland 3-1 and 16-1 on Feb. 23 but swept two from Goshen 3-2 and 11-5 the following day. SSU dropped a pair at Benedict on Feb. 26. The SSU men's golf team participated in the AASU/Southbridge Pirate Invitational on Feb. 24 and finished tied for 11th.
Groves Alumni Playing
At Morris 2008 Groves High graduates Jamecia Ready and Shaniqua Campbell are continuing their academic and athletic careers at Morris College in Sumter, SC. The pair are roommates as well as biology majors. Campbell, a 5-11 forward, starts while Ready, also a 5-11 forward, comes off the bench. "Campbell is playing very well for us," said Morris coach Gilbert Wilson. "She started slow but once she got use to the game she has been doing well," he added. "Jamecia started playing better later in the season and is working out well," says the coach. When the pair returned home on Feb. 28 to face Savannah State, they were greeted by family and friends as well as staff from Groves. Ready had nine points and nine rebounds while Campbell had eight rebounds and three points before fouling out.
